Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to jail for corruption

Global Desk: Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years in prison. She has been found guilty by a court in Myanmar in charges of corruption.

According to a report published by the BBC, she has been accused of accepting bribes in the form of cash and gold.

Additionally, she has also been charged with cases of crime related to voter fraud.

She has however denied all the charges. Besides, her adherents have condemned the court’s judgement.

The report also say that the court proceedings took place inside close doors, with her legal team being denied from communicating with the press.

The 76-year-old Suu Kyi is already under house arrest since 2021 after the military junta came to power in the country and overthrew the elected government led by her.

As a leader she has been a torchbearer of democracy in Myanmar and belongs to the National League for Democracy party.

She won honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her efforts to voice for democracy in Myanmar.

However, she has been subjective to criticism from the global community for her controversial stand in relation to the Rohingya atrocities in Myanmar.
