Guwahati, 22 April, 2022: The local body elections in Guwahati for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) was held on Friday.

The polling which began at 7.30 in the morning, continued till 4.30 PM, with some polling stations operating even after the closing time due to the queue of voters outside the voting centres.

It was conducted in over 750 polling stations, of which several them were exclusively controlled by women polling officials only.

Overall, the polls concluded peacefully. However, the voter turnout remained dismal all through the day.

By the end of the noon, only over 23 per cent voters had cased their votes. Additionally, by the end of the day, the polling percentage remained below 40 per cent.

The municipal election which was organized after 9 years saw candidates from different parties contesting from 57 out of 60 wards in the city.

In addition to the Bharataya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, new parties like the Aam Admi Party (AAP) and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) also did their debut in these elections.

According to reports, a few candidates from the BJP even won uncontested due to the absence of candidates from the opposition.

Currently, the municipal body in Guwahati is under the control of the BJP.

The leaders from the party are highly confident that the voters will show their faith and support to the BJP again and help its candidates to sweep the polls.

The counting of the votes will begin on 24th April at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati.
