Guwahati: Kamrup District Foundation Day Observed with Great Fanfare
Guwahati,02 April, 2022: The district administration of Kamrup (Rural) colorfully celebrated the first Jila Divas for four days from 31st day of March 2022 with great fanfare. The celebration included cultural get-togethers, musical performances, run from Singimari village to Sualkuchi, interaction with school students and academic get-togethers.
The inaugural session started on 31st March 2022. The deputy Commissioner Kailash Kartik N delivered the inaugural speech. Mr S.K.Roy former Deputy Commissioner was also the guest of honor, while Thaneswar Malakar, a former Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, the Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, and Dr Dayananda Pathak, a noted educationist, a writer of repute and editor-in-chief of Newsop24 attended the inaugural session at 1-30 PM.
A souvenir titled Kamrupa has also been published by the district administration. The Souvenir was released by Dr Dayananda Pathak.
In his speech he spoke about the historical legacy of Kamrup which was a very large independent country with great military power. Good many dynasties, Dr Pathak narrated, ruled the state for millennia. References to Kamrup can be found in the ancient texts like the great epics. Kumar Bhaskar Verma was one of the greatest kings of Kamrupa. He maintained diplomatic relations with King Harsavardhana of Kanauj and Thaneswar. During the British Colonial rule Kamrup was made a district. After independence Old Kamrup district has been divided into six new districts – Kamrup, Kamrup metro,Nalbari, Bajali, Baska and Barpeta.
The first Chief Minister (Called Prime Minister during the time) was from North Guwahati, while the second Chief Minister of Assam was from Hajo. The first Assamese Governor was also from Hajo. He was Bishnuram Medhi, the governor of Madras state. Dr Pathak also referred to the scholarship of Anandaram Barua, the first Assamese ICS.The first woman central minister was also from Kamrup District – Renuka Devi Barkotoki. She was a minister in the ministry of Morarji Desai.
In the inaugural session an item of oath-taking by the citizens of the district was also conducted by Parag Kumar Kakati, one of the senior most officers of the district. Besides, A book containing the future plans and programmes of the district administration, titled Sarathi, edited by Manjurani Deka, the Public Relation officer of the district, was also released by the Deputy Commissioner of the district.
The celebration of the Jila Divas was the first of its kind in Assam. The celebration evoked remarkable response from the people.
