Guwahati, 01 April, 2022: The elections for the two vacant seats for the upper house of the parliament (Rajya Sabha) in Assam were held on Thursday.

The ruling Bharataya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally secured both the seats.

Noted film producer Pabitra Gogoi Margherita was the winner from the BJP, while Rwngwra Narzary won from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), which is an alliance partner of the BJP.

In order to secure a victory a candidate needed a minimum of 43 votes. Reportedly, Margherita became the candidate with highest majority and secured 46 votes. Similarly, Narzary got 44 votes. Alternatively, Riun Bora, who was the only candidate from the Congress, managed to get only 35 votes.

According to the reports the counting of the votes was delayed by a few hours after the opposition complained of some discrepancy.

Besides, it has also been known that 12 opposition MLAs also voted for the BJP.

Reacting to the results, the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated both the winners.

Congress leader Ripun Bora on the other hand said that the outcome of the elections is a defeat of democracy.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s upper house strength has now reached 100. It has become the first party to do so since 1988.
