Assam and Meghalaya sign a new agreement to resolve their decade old border conflict

Regional Desk, 30 March, 2022: The decade old border conflict between the two northeast Indian states Assam and Meghalaya has received a new hope for peaceful resolution.

Both the states have reached a new negotiation to mutually solve the issue, which has been continuing for decades now.

On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to finally settle the issue.

Both the chief ministers signed the MOU in the national capital New Delhi in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah.

Additionally, members of parliament from Assam, including Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameswar Teli, and the Deputy CM of Meghalaya Prestone Tynsong was also present on the occasion.

Reacting to the same, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this MOU is a“historic occasion for the people of Assam and Meghalaya” where both the sides have agreed to resolve issues in six out of twelve areas of difference.

He also added that the remining six areas will also be resolved soon.  

In line with Sarma, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that this is an important ‘leap’ for both the states, which has been possible due to the teamwork of both the governments.

Likewise, Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that the MOU is a new milestone in accomplishing the goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in making North East India “peaceful and dispute free”.
