Editor’s Desk, 22 March, 2022: Guwahati stands on the bank of the river Brahmaputra, one of the largest rivers of the world. The civilization along the river is culturally designated as Brahmaputra civilization, existing from the time immemorial. But the people of Guwahati have failed to get water from the river. That is a great tragedy for the city. The people of Guwahati are proud of the river Brahmaputra, but they are not able to have the water of the river for daily use for failure of the Guwahati Municipal Authority and other competent authorities for water management. Some rich people have got water by digging deep wells, and this practice has depleted the ground water level beyond description. As a result, most of the shallow tube wells and household wells have gone dry. The state government laid some water pipes long back, but those pipes are also rusting for lack of water connection, The new Assam government under the leadership of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma should take the matter as a priority subject in his work agenda. Let us hope for the best.
