Guwahati, March 18, 2022: Barpeta, the headquarter of the Barpeta district in Assam is famous for Holi festival from the  ancient  past, and the festival became more and more pronounced after the Barpeta Satra came into existence right from the year 1583. The Satra institution was established by Madhabdeva, the great disciple of Srimanta Sankardeva who was one of the greatest vaishnavite saints of India, born in Alipukhuri, the present-day Nagaon district of Assam. Taking the cue of Lord Krishna and the Lord’s passion for colour and a festival pivoting round colours, Barpeta satra has been celebrating the colour festival in its exclusive way. There are different festive occasions very festively observed by the people of Barpeta. They call the festival as “Deul“. There are special musical performances like singing and dancing smeared with colours galore. During the festival Lord Krishna comes out of the Satra and moves the house Dhunusa, one of his ardent devotees. Lord`s wife Lakshmi does not like it. So, some of the devotees of Barpeta are for Lord Krishna, and soe are for Goddess Lakshmi. A mock fight takes place, and some bamboos are broken into pieces. Thereafter, Lord Krishna is allowed to enter his place within the Satra. Thereafter the festival, Deul, ends. People start weeping for having to wait for one year for the same festival.
