Ukraine’s geographical location is just being adjacent to Russia. Russia itself is a politically devastated country. It is yet to recover from the sad syndrome of USSR identity. Our question is what makes Russia so bellicose about Ukraine? Answers are multifaceted. Some parts of Ukraine want independence from Ukrainian suzerainty. They are in favour of Russian actions. Perhaps that is not the activating reason behind Russian invasion of Ukraine and elongated bellicosity. That position is an internal disorder in the body politics of Ukraine, and the same does not justify Russian invasion. Then what remains to be seen behind the conflagration inviting all eyes to Russia and Ukraine. This issue could have been resolved bilaterally.
The crux of the problem lies elsewhere. It may be the NATO syndrome. Ukraine has become a member of NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This point is unpalatable to Russia, which does not want a NATO member along its border at any cost, may be for its own security, obviously for its declared hegemony over the region. May be it is also a challenge to USA and NATO members, a traditional adversaries of Russia.
However, the conflict between the two sovereign nations could have been resolved through dialogues. If neighborly relation degenerates to this level, we have every reason to be panicky. We are for peace, and we condemn Russia`s dastardly attack on Ukraine. Let Russia learn to get rid of its overpowering ego. But the striking point is, no NATO member has come forward to help Ukraine. Ukraine has received nothing beyond lip service from the NATO giants. This is indeed a great lesson in international politics. Perhaps that is why India has chosen to remain aloof from both.
