Meanwhile, Maha Shivratri is being celebrated across the nation with much enthusiasm. Devotees thronged into the temples of lord Shiva to offer their prayers.

Out of all the Shivratris (night of Shiva), the Maha Shivratri is the most special and powerful. It comes only once a year during the months of February and March at the end of the inter season.

It is also believed that Shiva performed the divine dance known as the Tandava on this day.

Maha Shivratri also marks the overpower of shakti over ignorance and darkness.

People offer prayers to Lord Shiva by pouring water and milk on shivalingas and chant Shiva slokas on this day.
