Indian student killed in Ukraine while out to buy groceries

Global Desk: One Indian student named Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar (21) has been confirmed killed in the Ukraine war.

According to reports, Naveen went out to buy groceries and was standing in a queue in Ukraine’s second biggest city Kharkiv when he became of a Russian shelling.

Naveen who hails from the Haveri district in Karnataka was reportedly a medical student. He was pursuing his degree Kharkiv Medical University in the country.

Reports also say that around 30 minutes prior to the incident, Naveen also had a video conversation with his father.

The news was first confirmed by the officials of the External Affairs Ministry. In a tweet, a spokesperson of the MEA said that “With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family.”

In response to the tragedy, the state government in Karnataka stated that all efforts are bring put to bring the mortal remains of Naveen back to his family.

Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to the father of the student and expressed his condolences to the family.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Ukraine has asked the Indian students to immediately exit from the capital Kyiv.

At the same time, there are also reports that Indians and foreign nationals could not board trains in Kyiv. Many Indian students are still hoping for safe evacuation from the Indian government.
