Assam: President Kovind honours the legacy of Lachit Barphukan and Srimanta Sankaradeva

Guwahati: On Friday, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind landed in Assam to begin his three-day visit to the state.

He began his tour by inaugurating the event to mark the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan at Guwahati’s Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra’s premises.

During the event he said that Barphukan was one of the most valiant warriors in the history of India.

Besides, he also praised Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika and the contributions of Srimanta Sankaradeva in the history and culture of Assam.

Additionally, he also laid the foundation of Alaboi War Memorial, which commemorates the battle of Alaboi in the year 1669, where around ten thousand soldiers from the region were martyred by fighting against the Mughal Empire.

President Kovind also layed the foundation for the beautification and repair works of Lachit Barphukan’s Maidam situated in Teok, Jorhat.

He also praised the Chief Minister and the Government of Assam for conducting the birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan. He stated that by such events, the young generation gets an opportunity to relate with their history and experience the feeling of patriotism.

Moreover, President Kovind also visited the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. In a statement to the press, he said that he prayed for the progress and development of the youths of the state.

The president is scheduled to visit Tezpur and Kaziranga National Park on Saturday.
