Let people decide the names of their localities, not the government
Editor’s Desk: Recently, the Government of Assam has decided to change the names of some roads and places. Some of our place names are seen to be unpleasant for the new generation. For example, Sarabbhati, Kalapahar, Kukurmuta etc.
By the time the government having discussed with some sensible people have changed the name of Zoo Road as Radha Gobinda Barua Path. This name is partly accepted by the people, but despite all that, Zoo Road still continues.
Once the government decided to rename the Guwahati-Shillong Road (GS Road) as Indira Gandhi Road. But people did not accept that. There are many such examples.
Let the matter be, decided by the people of the localities, and not by the government. The change of names will demand the corresponding changes of local addresses of the people in their Aadhar cards, Pan cards, and in other documents. This will create new problems for the people.
