0 78

Editor’s desk: Election process for gaon panchayats and municipal bodies in Assam has started. Earlier election was on political party basis. Every political party could field candidates for memberships of the local bodies. The party commanding majority support, and having majority in the local bodies, was in a position to form the administrative bodies.

However, this time the Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, made a declaration that this time BJP would not field any candidate on party line. Other political parties have not made any declaration like that. Meanwhile, political parties have started campaigning. Some of the candidates have had the fortune to get elected unopposed.

It will really be a matter of a new beginning. But the candidates put forward by the BJP are BJP people, but they are in the ray as non-party people. In such election to the local bodies people involved in real social service should be in the fray. However, decision is left in the mind of the electorate.
